Should Adults Wear Braces?

While braces are common among teenagers, not everyone can get orthodontic treatment when they’re young. The good news is it’s never too late! Braces can be worn well beyond your adolescent years and they still come with a multitude of benefits. With a variety of options available, more and more adults are straightening their teeth and achieving their perfect smile later in life.

Reasons for Adults to Get Braces

There are a number of reasons you may want to get braces, even as an adult. For starters, the health of your teeth and mouth could be at stake without them. As we grow older, our jaws tend to shift. This can lead to overcrowding and overlapping teeth. Poorly arranged teeth can be harder to clean, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. In addition, if you have a poorly aligned bite, whether it’s an overbite or an underbite, you can run into issues with closing your jaw. Without proper intervention, this could lead to chewing and swallowing issues. In addition to improved dental hygiene, braces can help you achieve a natural, more appealing smile, leading to better self-confidence and pride in your appearance.

Are There Different Types of Braces?

If you’re in the market for braces, you have many options to choose from. The most well-known type of braces are traditional braces. These braces are made of high-grade stainless steel, which are attached to the front side of your teeth with an adhesive. It’s likely that your orthodontist will suggest these before other methods, due to their reliability. If you’re in the market for a more subtle look, however, then perhaps clear ceramic braces are what you’re looking for! Patients wear ceramic braces like traditional braces, but thanks to their color, they’re less noticeable against your teeth.

Invisalign is a great option for adults

If you don’t like the idea of having hardware placed on your teeth, then “invisible” braces are worth looking into. These are clear, customized aligners that you remove when you eat, floss, and brush. Invisalign is a popular brand of these kinds of braces. While “invisible” braces are the least noticeable option, they work best in patients who only have minor spacing issues. Depending upon what you’re looking to fix, it may be best to consider traditional or ceramic braces.
