A Day of Providing Free Dental Care to Underserved Children in Davidson County

Every child needs appropriate dental care in order to grow up with healthy smiles. Unfortunately, not every family has the right access or tools to receive care.

Who is TeamSmile?

TeamSmile is an advocacy organization who seeks to address that issue. For years, they’ve partnered with major sports teams and local dental organizations for a day of fun and stress-free dental care for underserved children in the community.

On September 10, 2019, Cumberland Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics sponsored a TeamSmile program with the Tennessee Titans, alongside other major sponsors including DentaQuest and Colgate. Around 200 kids from Davidson County schools were invited to participate, and were bused to Nissan Stadium near downtown Nashville, where the program was located.

A few of our own team members (including our dental staff all the way from Columbia, and our new pediatric dentist Dr. Jennell Galloway of Smyrna and White House) joined other volunteers from around the area. This included students from local dental schools and dentists who are looking to help provide positive change.

What goes on at a TeamSmile event?

Not only were the local area kids given free dental care (like x-rays, sealants, and restorative treatment) but there was an area for fun activities and face painting. Special appearances from Titans cheerleaders and players, including kicker Ryan Succop and the cuddly mascot T-Rac, were also spotted!

It was a fun-filled day of caring for the future generation and meeting like-minded peers within the Middle Tennessee community. TeamSmile’s Executive Director John McCarthy had this to say about CPDO’s involvement:

We are very grateful to Cumberland Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics for their support of our TeamSmile program with the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium. It was a wonderful day where we brought the community together to support children in the Nashville community. The children received free dental care and oral health education, while they enjoyed a special lifetime experience through the power of sports. Children got their faces painted, danced to the music from the DJ, and hung out with players, cheerleaders and T-Rac from the Titans, all while enjoying beautiful Nissan Stadium. We hope that Cumberland continues to support this exciting and impactful program for years to come.”
